Monday 17 August

This workshop is designed for all ages and all levels of experience. We will explore how collage can be used to create new and original portrait images.
Participants will be encouraged to experiment and breakthrough the barriers of representation and see how, in using collage, art is always accessible and has just needs to be found and brought into the public realm.
All ages are welcome, especially young people and individuals who have no experience of collage or art in general.
There are no preconceptions about the outcomes we will produce. No pressure to either create a likeness or produce a “finished” work of art.
The emphasis will be on creativity, fun, and engagement. A sense of involvement that goes beyond the simple creation of an image and explores how it is the relationships we experience that go up to making a sense of self outside that lies outside our usual understanding of identity of the material world.
Materials (source imagery, paper, glue, scissors, etc…) will be provided, but if you have magazines, photographs or any other material you wish to use please feel free to bring it with you.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Rob Birch is a contemporary British artist whose practice explores portraiture, identity, and the complexities of visual perception. Working across digital collage, painting, and mixed media, he creates layered portraits that challenge conventional representations of the human figure. Rather than seeking a straightforward likeness, Birch investigates how race, class, memory, and cultural identity shape the way we see ourselves and others.
