Book Talk: Dialogue in Amerta Movement
Join Folkestone-based dance researchers Sidonie Carey-Green and Emma Meehan in a conversation on Dialogue in Amerta Movement, a new book by Meehan and Indonesian scholar Samsul Maarif. The text investigates how dialogue can unfold through movement, drawing on the Amerta Movement approach developed by Javanese artist Suprapto Suryodarmo. It is accompanied by an online resource with writings and films by Amerta Movement practitioners in Indonesia.
Their conversation opens up the book’s key themes: embodied dialogue, intercultural encounters through dance, and the role of movement practice in social justice. It also considers the role of the practitioner as researcher, especially in working in and with different cultures in an ethical way.
The event will include conversation, questions, film clips and prompts for movement.
Following on from the talk on MondayThe accompanying workshops focus on movement, connection and collective experience, allowing both public participants and practitioners to explore ideas around physical presence, distance, empathy and healing.
We Are Improv Dancers
workshop
"Dance dance dance. We meet like ocean waves, we share our rhythm, our gifts, we rise together, we crash together. We hum, we spin, we breathe. And suddenly we are creators of a dance"
This is a call to come and explore how to create a non-choreographic, collective dance. Together we will explore the tools used in movement improvisation: the body's natural movement range and rhythms, solo and as a group. Through movement games, music, witnessing and automatic writing, we will open new creative pathways and translate them from a dancer's perspective. We may step outdoors to gather inspiration from our environment bringing those impressions back into the dance.
Along the way, we'll learn from our own movement, witness others, and discover what becomes possible when individual creativity meets collective imagination. The workshop will culminate in the creation of an improvised group piece, shared within a supportive, and non-performative environment.
